damn straight.
though to be fair, Fletcher & Giggs are Scottish & Welsh respectively, so they won’t do much for England’s team under McClaren, but hey… we’re all British

champs. league draw
seriously, what are the odds that Chelsea would draw Barca for the 3rd year in a row. Liverpool and Arsenal got good draws. ManU got what should be a fun draw… Celtic & Benfica (they being the group that dumped us out last year).
on a random note, did you know Clint Dempsey has served 3 suspensions this year in MLS already? wow. somebody get that guy to the EPL already

busy busy busy
i so rarely blog about anything personal these days.. to the point that my default new blog post category is now ‘OpenSolaris’. a little bit sad, neh?
i guess that’s what happens when you love your work. oh well. losing some blog audience is a small price to pay i guess
anyway, after today’s cleanup and reorganising work, my basement is starting to look… well… almost there.
two years after we started, with countless distractions along the way (including putting up two windows last weekend), we’re finally done with the drywall. (seriously, we started drywalling two years ago… sad, i know). our next steps are to texturise, and paint the walls/ceiling, and then lay down a floor. once we have those done, the basement will be… well, liveable!
our inner storage room in the basement is finally done, with all the storage in place, and my new workbench area and tool wall all organised.
after a long afternoon of inhaling plaster, we headed down to Milpitas to “Cafe Orphelia” at McCarthy Ranch for some great filet mignon on the “hot rock” grill. they bring out a big rock/stone that’s been super-heated, and you grill your own steak on it. great steak. mmmm…afterwards, we had some red bean shaved ice. we ate all the red bean and then asked the waitress to box up the remaining unfinished ice. she gave us a blank stare and asked why we wanted to save ice? of course, isis was in the car… and she looooooves ice cream, so we thought she might want some shaved ice.
of course, isis lapped it all up - and we have some great photos (which i’ll post tomorrow).
after that, we headed down to Los Altos and tried out the new Satura bakery which was awesome. we got 4 desserts and loved all 4 of them.
and on a very last quickie note: we’re planning on adopting a second beagle.
his name is Dusty and he’s 3 years old. i can’t wait!

ramblings
i’ve been horribly delinquent in posting to my blog recently (aside from the brief cheer for a Bay Area MLS team a few days ago)
so, here goes one of my patented brain-dumps about what i’ve been up to recently. work stuff first. then personal.
i’ve become an intern sponsor for OpenSolaris, and started out sponsoring a few of Rich Lowe’s fixes. it’s been great to see the process working first-hand, but there’s nothing like being an actual sponsor and working hand in hand with someone in the community to make OpenSolaris better. the collaboration is great… IRC, IM, email, we have almost all the tools we need….
….one tool we don’t quite have yet is full SCM for ON. it’s coming, i swear it is. actually, a lot of my time spent recently has been on getting ON to build in Mercurial. this encompasses a few things: converting ON to Mercurial, and making sure ON builds cleanly without Teamware/SCCS around. these were actually some of the bugs that Rich and I have been working on. all my scripts/code to convert ON to Mercurial seem to be working well… well enough in fact that we started publishing Mercurial bundles on Tuesday. this was really gratifying, it’s a huge step forward to allowing community members to properly get diffs, build patches, etc.
the other OpenSolaris related thing i’ve been working on is getting the infrastructure ready for the SCM beta test phase. the companion CD, and JDS will be our first beta testers, and i’m sure it’s gonna be a rocky first few steps - but this is a big step forward to getting SVN/Hg hosting on opensolaris.org for our projects. this has been heinously complicated, mainly because there are so many groups involved. i’ll spare you all the details, but suffice it to say - that this has at times been tedious and frustrating - but it’s also been necessary, so oh well… some things you just have to put your head down and work on for the better good i guess.
as for all my copious spare time away from Sun, i’ve been working on the house - cleaning up the basement and painting in an attempt to remodel one of the rooms into a storage/work-area. we’re getting closer to having a non-repulsive basement now.
wendy and i bought a 37″ LCD HDTV which has been nice. conveniently, in time for the HD coverage of the World Cup. the TV purchase, and the recent gift of an Opteron 185 chip from a friend gave me impetus to finally build the HDTV MythTV box i’ve been dreaming of for a while… so i went out and purchased all the components i need to build a super-uber-coolio HDTV MythTV box with 2 tuners. this will be my summer project, and one i’ll be blogging about periodically. i’m also hopefully going to install the SunRay server software on it and have an uber home server.
it’s been years since i’ve built my own machine (freshman year of college i think…), so i’m pretty excited to be geeking out on a project like this. it’ll be a lot of fun.
last weekend we headed to Denver for Wendy’s sister’s wedding. it was weird being in Denver with 90 degree weather. my body and brain is so conditioned to Denver being only a place to go snowboard… it was bizarre.
anyway. random ramblings are over. the webapp is done building (or complaining, at this point), so i need to get back to work. stop reading this junk, and go get some work done yourself.

Toronto FC
goddamn. don’t get me wrong… i love toronto. it’s one of my favourite cities in the world….
but jeez. how the hell do they get an MLS franchise club, while the Bay Area has to lose the Earthquakes?!?!?!?!
jason (and by proxy, tammy) turned me onto MLS from my EPL snobbery, and now i have to admit i do follow the MLS and the US team closer than i have in the past. i really wish we had an MLS club around here. maybe not in Oak-town, but SF would be nice.

and then there were none…
first owen
and now rooney
i don’t fancy our chances with our backup strikers. who are we gonna play? bent and crouch? bent and defoe? crouch and defoe? as much as i think crouch is ineffective, i think as a target man, he would play well with bent or defoe. bent and defoe are too alike to pair up well.

random musings…
my random thoughts for the day while i consume the spicy chicken sandwich i bought for lunch:
hrm. this sandwich is not bad. surprisingly spicy. i have to say, this may have supplanted Jack’s spicy chicken in my expert Zagat-like ratings of spicy chicken sandwiches.
the US-Germany football match on Wednesday was sad. it’s sad when the only goal your team scores is a freak goal with an assist from the keeper. seriously, Germany destroyed the US - and it wasn’t even Germany’s strongest team. our defense had more holes in it than cheesecloth. and an midfield missing Donovan, Beasley, and Reyna was sadly lacking any creativity whatsoever. the US team, at its strongest, can be a FIFA top 10 team (i dispute FIFA awarding them 5th, but whatever…) - but the US team has no depth. look at England, Spain, or Italy: they have depth in numbers. Owen is out? fine, no problem…toss in Bent, Defoe, or Ashton (just… please… don’t put in Heskey again. i can’t take it.). England has a wealth of players in defense… Carragher, Terry, Ferdinand, Campbell, King, Brown… and that’s only the centrebacks! who does the US have? Oguchi Onyewu…and uh… uh…hrm. yeah. the US defense was lackluster and unconvincing.
today i had my first english breakfast tea latte since i left SoCal. mmmm…. i loved coffee bean and tea leaf when i lived down in San Diego. little did i know there was one a few blocks away from the Sun office in SF. heaven. thank you connie
some of you may be familiar with Sun’s Flexible Workspace setup. i’ve been working in SF most of March and enjoying the iWork and flexibility of being able to work up here. what i’m not enjoying is the f-ing idiot who i can hear anywhere within a 10 cubicle radius. i don’t mind people on the phone… heck, i make a conscious effort to reserve an open cube instead of an office. what i mind is this guy who gets so frustrated at everything that he’s always hitting his desk and swearing or letting out huge sighs that i can hear even when i have my headphones on. and i’m wearing Shure e2c’s… the ones with the foam ear-plug-like inserts that go into the canal… the ones that block out most ambient noise on BART. and yet, i can still hear this guy who swears and curses, and talks into the phone like he’s trying to compete with a 747 engine for sheer volume.
to the guy in the cube next to me: please. just STFU. i used to think you were so stressed out you were going to go postal on us here. now i’m so annoyed, i’m worried i may go postal on you. my fiancee is an oral surgeon… i’ve looked through her textbooks enough to know where the weak points of the skull and jaw are. please don’t make me break your jaw. please?
