fyi, i’ll be going up to the slopes for a few days, and then gone for a couple of weeks of vacation to thailand & malaysia, so i won’t be very responsive or updating my blog much.
i’ve got most of the build 30 delivery done, just waiting for some review - and kupfer should be making the delivery. if you have any OpenSolaris questions while i’m gone, please direct them to the discussions.
have a great holiday!

wordpress
so i made the switch to Wordpress yesterday evening. so far, so good. i like it a lot.
the RSS feeds let me do category feeds, and the plugin system is fantastic. it imported all my stuff from MoveableType perfectly (as far as i can see).

planetidentity!
i’m happy to announce grommit is now hosting PlanetIdentity, Pat Patterson’s aggregation of identity-related blogs.
gives me a warm fuzzy feeling when i can actually use grommit’s bandwidth and storage for a community purpose.

new hd for grommit
attn all grommit users. be sure to say a big thank you to chester (or at the very least, buy him a beer next time you see him). why? because he just bought grommit a 160gb hard drive so we can have full nightly system backups again.
cheers chester!

planet grommit, and it’s various satellites
i finally made an aggregation of all the grommit blogs today using the very impressive Planet aggregation project. i made some slight modifications to handle Xanga RSS feeds (which don’t aggregate very well due to the date/timestamps being in the title for some awful reason). anyway, much customisation later…and Planet Grommit is unveiled.
yeah. original title i know. but who cares… it’s just nice to be able to read all my friend’s blogs on one page.

a milestone in my (internet) life
after many many years of monitoring…. i am finally the #1 ranked result on google when you search for Stephen Lau.
oh happy day.
it’s all downhill from here.

at the speed of light…
i added a login link to the grommit sidebar to let blog authors login (without having to remember the MovableType login URL), and not 2 seconds after i hit save on the HTML file, i get an IM from erik saying: (15:24:23) erik: hey - are you gonna keep that link to the movable type login page? (15:24:25) erik: it’s handy

blog titles
forgot to mention… i imported all my old blog entries over into the moveabletype’s database. however, since i didn’t use titles in my old blog, i needed something to fill the space.
blank titles are boring.
so i busted out the zippy fortune quote database… hence the random esoteric collection of titles on the archived (before 6/12/03) blog entries.

new blog!
redid the blog using MovableType. no real reason other than it looked kind of interesting. erik was the one who inspired me to do it…so blame him. it seems like a pretty interesting and powerful piece of software extremely flexible in its use of templates, etc.
i still don’t totally understand where some people get so much to say in their blogs. i guess other people divulge more intimate thoughts into their blogs than i do.
wendy and i had a discussion tonight about how internet dating works…. and i think it has something to do with people’s confidence in who they can divulge their intimate and deep thoughts to. it’s like a Catholic confession. you can’t see the priest, and that’s somehow more comforting. i think it’s the same thing with internet dating. people feel more safe/comfortable talking to someone whom they know they will never have to meet face to face. so you can tell that person things that you wouldn’t tell, say, your co-worker for example.
