KoЯn->Kanye (Songbird1.4) merge
Thursday, Dec 10. 2009 – Category: Songbird
Just a heads up for any brave Songbird users who have been running on the KoЯn branch lately… in preparation for the release, we finished merging it over to the Songbird1.4 branch last night.
What does this mean? If you’re looking to pull and build your own, make sure you pull the Songbird1.4 branch. If you’re just looking for nightlies, make sure you grab them from the Songbird1.4 branch as well.

Thanks for the update Stevel

Great that things are coming along. What should we expect if we try a nightly from the newly merged Korn/Kanye 1.4 branch? Half-finished Purple Rain I guess, so I assume Gonzo is still there and should work okay? Any other noteworthy problems? Thanks in advance. I’m itching to try it, but don’t want to end up with a really broken build (since I know you guys are hard at work and haven’t finished everything).

Also, whoa, what’s up with whacked.net and not blog.songbird?
December 10th, 2009 at 10:29
Thanks, Although I’m not a big fan of/have to get used to the Purple Rain feather, I’m content with the continuation of the 1.4 branch.
till now it feels smooth and stable and I’m looking forward to the KoЯn release!

@Chris: Purple Rain should be mostly done… we’ll need to drop some new icons in, but it’s otherwise pretty fully functional. Gonzo is there, but has a wee bit of wonkiness. Unfortunately we had to break backwards compatibility with Gonzo Feathers, so you’ll see some weird behaviour with regards to the display pane management, and the media view buttons.
re: the whacked.net thing, I decided to post to my personal blog and syndicate it out to the Songbird blog… no real reason why, I’ve experimented with it in the past, and figured it’s a cheap trick to make it look like I blog more than I really do

@Stevel Can you please give me an idea of what the Linux songbird user can expect in the “Korn” release?
December 10th, 2009 at 14:22
so when is Kanye songbird coming out?
December 10th, 2009 at 18:56
A so probably better chances with Purple Rain right now. Are you planning on porting Gonzo to the Purple Rain feather format or will Purple Rain supercede it completely as Gonzo did to Rubberducky?
December 10th, 2009 at 23:34
@coskibum Looks like not much. Purple skin. CDRip, MSC support and playlist sync are windows only.
@Stevel Hope Gonzo will be back to normal before final release. I hate Purple color. Gonzo was much similar to iTunes
and suggested we will be able to replace itune soon.

who cares???? release something bugfixed & stable already!!

Just out of curiosity, when can we expect to see podcast support completed? It’s the only reason I’m still using Rhythmbox. The new feather looks great, BTW. I’m glad you’ve moved away from the iTunes look.
CD ripping on Linux is another must, I guess. And support for the Zune HD… I’ll try to be patient and wait for that.

Hmmm…I tried installing the new nightlies on two Ubuntu machines and got mixed results.
The first is my computer at work. It’s 2-ish year old desktop with a pretty run of the mill processor and Ubuntu 9.10. There was no music library and no add-ons installed. Songbird loaded really quickly, probably in less than 10 seconds.
The second computer is my laptop, which is 2 years old and is comparable in speed to the desktop. It runs Ubuntu 8.10. This computer has a library of 2597 tracks (mostly fixed rate 320kpbs mp3s and some ogg vorbis), not a large music library by any stretch of the imagination. I also have 10 add-ons installed: 7digital music store, Amazon Fetcher, Concerts, Discogs Fetcher, Google Search, Last.FM, Mashtape (not enabled), MediaFlow, Shoutcast Radio, and Vinyl Album Art. On this computer, Songbird took a really long time to load, probably over a minute.
So my question is, what is making up the huge discrepancy in load times? Does the library take that long to load? Is it the add-ons? Is there some library in newer versions of Ubuntu that speeds up the load time? And what can we little old users do to help fix this problem? A 1 minute startup time is definitely unacceptable.

For the love of songbird, please release something that is stable, starts fast, and doesn’t eat my memory like the cookie monster… at this point I just want the old classic songbird back, forget all these constant feature updates and merges that are buggy and broken. Was yet another new theme really necessary with all these other issues?
