MozBot Google BotModule

Saturday, Jan 17. 2009  –  Category: Songbird

Partly for fun, I threw together a MozBot to hang out in #songbird this week.  One of the things I ended up doing was making a minor re-write of the Google.bm BotModule to use Google’s AJAX/REST API (available via the REST::Google::Search CPAN module) since the previously used SOAP API has been deprecated.

For anyone interested, you can grab the code here.

Update: I forgot to mention, this Google BotModule includes the totally awesome GoogleFight feature.  ;-)   Sadly, we use this on #songbird way too often.

It’s worth submitting the changes to Bugzilla (Webtools::Mozbot) for inclusion in Mozbot proper.

@Samuel: Yeah I’d like to… do you know who is maintaining Mozbot these days? All the pages I looked at seemed to pretty out of date. I got the impression it was stale code..

I do. :-) As of a few months ago. See http://www.psychoticwolf.net/blog/2008/12/ifitsunownedyoumaybuyit.php

As for the website being old (yeah the last release really was 2002.) I’m working on it.

Hey Wolf – I filed and attached the updated module to bug 474241.

In case you’re interested I thought I’d let you know that I have a patch that extends it to search maps, video, images and news. Thanks again for releasing this. :)

As of last night, this module is now part of mozbot, and will be included in the upcoming Mozbot 2.6. Thanks again for the work.

@Jesse: As ss said in comment #1, file a bug in bugzilla.mozilla.org and attach your patch there. Thanks.
