would you? could you?

December 26th, 2006 Stephen Lau

goddamn

now that’s just pure motherly instinct. “would you” and “could you” thoughts aside for the moment… could you even physically react that fast?

i’d like to think i could, and i would. but wow. that story just got me on so many levels: sorrow, joy, and awe.

…. i don’t believe in heaven, but if i did - you know she’s there.

i do believe in karma, and that mother just got a lifetime of good karma for her sacrifice.

Yes you would and you certainly could. No question about it. Know why? There is no “thinking” in situations like this. You just react. You go on automatic and the shift is immediate. “Thinking” is too slow to even consider. Perhaps that’s evolution at work, I don’t know. I had a situation long ago that gave me small taste of this process: http://blogs.sun.com/jimgris/entry/tony There was more time to react than this mother had, of course, but at least it gave me a flavor of what happens when confronted with an impossible situation.
