Oh -- and don't use Green Mode. Use 'P' when you just want to take the picture without any fuss. Start playing with M, A, and S. Never use the Vari-program modes. Set the focus point to manual selection with AF-A. Hmm... Try to blend ambient light ("dragging the shutter") by reducing shutter speed, opening aperture, and/or increasing ISO when shooting inside. Try playing with flash exposure compensation.

And have fun!

Congrats. I've had a D50 for about a year. One of the best purchases I've made in a while. It's fantastic for pictures of the kid (they'd be in the other room by the time the P&S finally snapped the jpeg).

One word of advice: get the external flash ASAP. Bounce it off the ceiling if it's white. Use it in bright sunlight to reduce contrast. Makes pictures look so much better than the internal flash. I got the SB-600.

Which lens did you opt for?
