goddamn. don’t get me wrong… i love toronto. it’s one of my favourite cities in the world….

but jeez. how the hell do they get an MLS franchise club, while the Bay Area has to lose the Earthquakes?!?!?!?!

jason (and by proxy, tammy) turned me onto MLS from my EPL snobbery, and now i have to admit i do follow the MLS and the US team closer than i have in the past. i really wish we had an MLS club around here. maybe not in Oak-town, but SF would be nice.

    It’s cause they actually CARE about “football” up in canada. Care, as in willing to pay to see it played. How it gets an MLS team is beyond me; i thought canada had their own pro league (at least they did when i was a kid).

    Welcome to the MLS buddy. I became a fan just after Miami lost their franchise too. Its crazy. Especially since both Cali stadiums always looked a lot more packed than most except for DC. I’m up here in Boston and the Revs support is barely decent. But hey, imagine the frustration of being in a major market like NY and never posting a win all season.

    Relax buddy, the San Jose Earthquakes will be back in 3 years I bet. It’ll be an entirely new team though.

    Toronto is getting a team because they are a Major market. There is 7 million is the Toronto Area alone and the city is very diverse. Guaranteed a parade every year the World Cup is played due to the city being so multicultural.

    Bring Dwayne DeRosario back to Canada….

    Toronto definetly deserves a team because for as long as I can remember me and my friends have dreamed of having our own proffesional soccer club. I have known countless people skip school and work just to see their favourite uefa clubs play on satellite. And without a doubt Toronto has the ability to support ANY major league team, including a team in the NFL. And we would have one if it weren’t for the fact that the Buffalo Bills would lose a large sum of money that they recieve from die-hard football fans from Toronto who make the drive to be there. We don’t all go crazy for hockey up here.

    The fact is that American Football based on the sport of Rugby is a hot ticket in the US and Canada being as cultured as it is. Is a perfect place for a FOOTBALL team at the professional leval will be good. Heck Toronto could Support an NFL, NBA, NHL, CFL,MLS, and an MLB team. But hey who knows Major League style Football the Likes of the European field might catch on but with the American Rugby Football league the NFL and how americans love there version of the game I dout that Major League Football will stick it out in America but they do have there comitments to FIFA but Go Toronto Football Club Go and show the North American market the real Love Of The Game

    Major League Soccer announced Wednesday that the league has formed a partnership with Lew Wolff and John Fisher, principal owners of the Oakland Athletics of Major League Baseball, that gives the pair an exclusive three-year window to acquire a new MLS team in the Bay Area, should they be successful in developing a new soccer-specific stadium.

    “It’s our plan to add a 14th team in 2008. That team will likely come in the Midwest, likely either St. Louis or Cleveland or a number of other places that we’re looking to that could represent our 14th team,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said. “Obviously, we’ve got two additional teams. We hope that San Jose will be one of them and a number of other markets from Philadelphia, San Diego and a number of other places that could fill in that 16th spot.”

    I am italo-canadese, and I have been religiously following the Serie A and the Premiership since as long as I can remember. However watching a match on TV is hardly as good as partying at the Stadium with thousands of people. I think if Toronto targets the large Chinese, Italian, Spanish, and Iraqi community residing in the city and Greater Toronto Area, fans would be hard pressed to find tickets. The reason why no-one supports the Lynx is that no-one is going to pay good money for players that are of the same or lessor skill than yourself. One major team in Canada could produce the canadian team to place most of their players within the squad and hopefully the city can pursuade some of the larger nearing the end of their career to join the club. Ronaldo has expressed a well documented desire to play his last 2 seasons as a Professional within the MLS.

    Should’ve gone to Montreal or Vancouver first. There’s far more support for the Impact and Whitecaps then there is in Toronto.

    Toronto is a perfect choice to place a professional soccer team in. Montreal couldn’t afford to keep the Expos and Vancouver couldn’t even keep the Grizzlies. How would you expect them to keep another pro sports team? Toronto was a logical choice for expansion into Canada. Way to go Toronto.

    Well in my opinion, having an MLS team in Toronto is awesome! I’ve been a Chelsea fan since my early childhood, and now that they are playing amazingly, its hard to get to see them frequently (or if ever) with my schedule and the costs associated with one or two frequent visits a year. Having a team in Toronto, a decent team that is, not a Lynx team, would help the Torontonians to get a feel of being a part of one united footballing city, we don’t need to watch guys with no teeth boxing while skating for Torontonians to feel united. And Toronto FC is an awesome name by the way (due to the name’s city connection), unlike pathetic names that are associated with MLS teams. Hopefully they’ll have a good-enough team to WIN the MLS, not just compete, mainly because the football here is pathetic, look what happens to the Canadian and US team abroad hahaha… The good players also leave to England to compete! Canada is Rich and Toronto is the biggest city here, so might as well have a great team that’ll be decent enough to last for at least a hundred years!

    Yay!!!!!!!! it’s what I’ve been waiting for, ever since I went to T.O for the first time I craved for some good old soccer to watch live in this city and there’s a lot of potential to grow a decent fan base, I’m really excited, right now I do not live in Canada but I’m coming back next year, this is just another good reason to do it… I’m from southamerica so just imagine what a big fan of soccer I am… Go Toronto Go…. let’s get that cup already!

    Montreal could easily support a mls team wtih around 13000 fans packed at claude robillard stadium each match to watch the Impact, huge support is bound to be there for an mls team. The alouettes should take the olympic stadium so a mls team can use the 20 000 capacity molson stadium

    As you can tell by my name ,I’m a life long tim.Ilove football and watch it religousely,I’m definately happy that Toronto is getting a MLS team.Living in Toronto we need a world class team(might take a few years lol).But my mates and I will support them through and through.

    Toronto FC, well im a fan of Soccer(these arrogant a-holes who keep trying to prove their deep knowlegde of the sport by referring to it as football, really get my goat…..like dude give it up….on this side of the pond it has been known as soccer for a long time so who cares, you say tomato, I say soccer…sorry, anyways) i personally am a little sceptical about the prospect of professional soccer,(or futbol for the sensitive types) having a chance to floorish here in Nord america. Sure, every four years we all get excited about the game, but that quickly dies down, and north americans have other professionall sports that they prefer and know already….not to say dont give it a good go, but still I have my doubts. Also, although Toronto FC sounds like a fine name to christen our club, as compared to the ridiculous american team names….I have a strong liking for “The Toronto Young Men” JUVENTINO PER SEMPRE!!!

    Its not that there are no soccer fans in toronto is just that everyone who likes soccer supports their own countries since toronto is so diverse. I went to the sporting (portugal) vs santos (brazil) game a while back and their was a great atttendence of 20 000 at the rogers center. I dont think people are interested in the MLS league. In my opinion its a joke. The only chance toronto fc has is if they promote their team well.

    Target the chinese and iraqi community? Its young British decendants like myself and my mates that are going to be the major supporters of this team.     well the TFC hooligan comes on pretty strong, but I think he’s definitely on to something there. There are imports in Ontario, like me, who get on planes to fly to Europe to follow their teams. We are football / soccer crazy here. But, the problem has always been that the local pro Toronto team (ie Lynx) could never live up to the likes of Liverpool or Juventus, teams that Torontonians consider to be truely worthy of supporting. You’ve got to remember that Toronto people think they are major league and they deserve the best. Well guess what you snotty nosed gits, you’ve got a stadium now, you’ve got a team, get behind them and fill the gate, so we can raise the revenue to sign decent players, and then bring in Liverpool and those Juve wanks and we’ll beat em. COME ON YOU REDS … and to the guy in the Bay area who wants a team, if we’re team #13, maybe you’ll ride our coat tails and round it out to an even 14.

    I just got the call for my season tickets!! Apparently, they’ve sold over 3000 deposits for season ticket deposit packages, and they are 8th out of 13 in the MLS in terms of season ticket deposits!

    I worked with the Earthquakes in sales and they were usually in the top half of season ticket sales as well. So don’t count your chickens..blah blah. The problem was that if you weren’t locked into the tickets already there were just too many options for things to do in the Bay Area. Maybe Toronto doesn’t have that problem though.

    As for the name, while nothing will ever beat the Wizards for lamest moniker; calling it FC is pretentious and embarrassing. That would be like calling an EPL team Calcio Club. It makes the league look as dumb as having Milan Football Club is Series A.

    Hopefully Lew will bring the Quakes back to the Bay Area. Hey, Candlestick is going to be empty in a couple of years….

    bisser is an idiot, who obviously doesn’t understand that the club is trying to go for a more common name found amoung europe therefore increasing the attention given to it, Toronto FC will get an amazing support crowd, not only from european countries, but asian countries such as people from Korea, India (more so Punjabis), China, Japan and the middle East….oh and not to mention the africans we have here

    How is calling it “FC” pretentious? Isn’t it a football club? It is a pretty common name for clubs, and is fairly neutral.. it is definitely better than some of the other traditionally named teams (Real Salt Lake City, DC United.. I doubt DC really had two separate teams before).

    As an aside, TFC now leads the league in season ticket sales (at least they were before the Beckham signing, which has surely knocked us off top), and are on the verge of eclipsing the Raptors in season tickets sales.

    While I’m not crazy about MLSE either, I’ve gotta disagree with you regarding the location mpok. York U is very difficult to get to via the TTC, and the subway line is still many years away. Also, there is a GO train stop right beside BMO field.

    I went down to NYC a few years ago to see Juventus play ManU. They were playing at Giants stadium, and without a car it was very trying to get there. We ended up having to get a taxi, which was quite pricey.

    It’s pretentious because it’s ostentatious in the same way that we will now have every barney in Southern California talking about “Becks is a master off the set piece while on the pitch sporting his EPL kit…..”

    It’s Major League “Soccer”. The only thing that makes it somewhat reasonable is Football in French, but I still think we need to stop acting like the unwanted little brother of World Soccer.

    Subway is only 2 year away plus fast growing York Region is just a few minutes away. One thing i’m not sure about (maybe you can fill me in on this) is population density around new stadium downtown. York has around 50000 students plus York Region is booming.
