“JavaDB: An idea whose time has finally come?”

Monday, May 1. 2006  –  Category: OpenSolaris

That’s the title of a blog post by ZDNet’s David Berlind. So why my interest? after all…those of you who know me know that i’m very much not a Java-geek. in fact, despite 6 years at UCSD and almost 3 years at Sun now, i still don’t know Java.

Actually, a few weeks ago – I didn’t know what JavaDB or Apache Derby was. It wasn’t until FISL, when my fellow Sun-geek Francois showed off JavaDB/Derby, that I learned about it. I installed Solaris/OpenSolaris on his laptop, and he showed me the coolness of JavaDB.

Even I can appreciate the geekiness of an offline DB… very cool. I’m not sure if his DerbyTax demo is available online or not, but it’s pretty compelling. Anyway, it’s nice to see the good press for Francois’ hard work.
