sigh. so many things going on, and i’m already overcommitted.
i’m gonna be manning the opensolaris pod at the Sun booth tomorrow from 12:45pm-8:00pm. unfortunately, there are 3 other events i’d like to go to as well:
- the Blogger’s bash from 5:30-7pm
- SVOSUG meeting from 5:30-7:30pm
- Derby BoF from 7:30-9:30pm
should be fun if i can get around to going to all of them, but i fear sacrifices will have to be made.
i love sinfest

i’ve said it numerous times, but i love sinfest. if only tatsuya didn’t take so many sabbaticals
anyway, i’m catching up on the last couple of weeks i missed, and the strip from april 30th is probably a classic example of why i love sinfest, and why he will never see mainstream publication.
Toronto FC

goddamn. don’t get me wrong… i love toronto. it’s one of my favourite cities in the world….
but jeez. how the hell do they get an MLS franchise club, while the Bay Area has to lose the Earthquakes?!?!?!?!
jason (and by proxy, tammy) turned me onto MLS from my EPL snobbery, and now i have to admit i do follow the MLS and the US team closer than i have in the past. i really wish we had an MLS club around here. maybe not in Oak-town, but SF would be nice.
thanks for the poop!!

this blog entry is dedicated to the woman who was walking her dog by my house while i sat at the window working from home:
i just wanted to say thank you for leaving the bag of your dog’s poop in my garbage can. i appreciate the fact that you looked around to make sure nobody was looking… aye… you’re a sly sneaky one alright! i felt it my obligation to give you a quick tip: some homes have these things called “a second story” (this means a level of the house which is above the ground floor level). it might behoove you to check the window of such second stories when you next surreptitiously try to sneak your dog’s poop into someone else’s garbage can. i do appreciate the fact that you picked up your dog’s poop in a bag (better than some), but if you’re going to go that trouble, why not just carry it back to your own home and garbage can?
i suppose i don’t really mind to be honest… i mean, i throw my dog’s poop in my garbage can all the time - so i’m used to the smell. i really don’t mind… and in fact, i was happy to turn back to my work until i noticed YOUR BAG OF POOP FELL OUT BECAUSE MY GARBAGE CAN IS FULL. and yes, i know you saw because i saw you turn around, look at the bag of poop on the ground, look around you to see if anyone noticed (again, i must point out the whole “second story” thing…), and then quickly walk away.
anyway, i suppose i should really thank you because it’s not often i get to yell out “THANKS FOR THE POOP” out my window to a woman who turns around in surprise and then quickly walks away.
and yes. i know which house you live in.
so if you read this, please try to convince me why i should continue picking my dog’s poop up when she does her business on your lawn.
oh for shame

forgive me father for i have sinned…. i willingly wrote an O(n^2) algorithm.
don’t worry, it was (mostly) experimental. this ON conversion from Teamware to Mercurial is hitting all sorts of interesting edge cases all revolving around closed code. sigh. let this be a lesson to you: never write closed code.
fisl panorama

here’s a panorama photo i put together showing off the fisl exhibit floor. you can see the Sun rest area right up front!

one more fisl post

i’m sure y’all are sick of my fisl posts, but here’s one more…
a trio of Uruguayans grabbed SXCR install DVDs and Nexenta LiveCDs and promptly came back the next day with install questions, as well as the obligatory “you forgot to tell us the root password for the livecd” comment.
anyway, one of them was kind enough to take a photo of me diving into their Vaio & Thinkpads to help out with the SXCR install.
“JavaDB: An idea whose time has finally come?”
Monday, May 1. 2006 – Category: OpenSolaris
That’s the title of a blog post by ZDNet’s David Berlind. So why my interest? after all…those of you who know me know that i’m very much not a Java-geek. in fact, despite 6 years at UCSD and almost 3 years at Sun now, i still don’t know Java.
Actually, a few weeks ago - I didn’t know what JavaDB or Apache Derby was. It wasn’t until FISL, when my fellow Sun-geek Francois showed off JavaDB/Derby, that I learned about it. I installed Solaris/OpenSolaris on his laptop, and he showed me the coolness of JavaDB.
Even I can appreciate the geekiness of an offline DB… very cool. I’m not sure if his DerbyTax demo is available online or not, but it’s pretty compelling. Anyway, it’s nice to see the good press for Francois’ hard work.
