source browser has been updated

I just updated the source browser with the build 28 sources. One new thing that OpenGrok supports is RSS feeds of individual source files. How cool is that!

okay. jesse, and canada both did it, so i’m joining in. mine isn’t nearly as literary as theirs though, as the closest book to me happened to be Solaris Systems Programming

  1. Grab the nearest book.
  2. Open the book to page 123.
  3. Find the fifth sentence.
  4. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.
  5. Don’t search around and look for the “coolest” book you can find. Do what’s actually next to you.

We first describe file descriptors and then describe the functions that most UNIX I/O operations rely on, like open, close, read, write, and lseek

what’s upcoming…

whenever they fix our AC units and bring our tonic build machine back online, i’ll be able to release the build 28 delivery.. hopefully tomorrow, possibly delayed though depending on the stupid AC unit.

sigh.

the split-gate stuff is looking good. i believe we’re aiming for putback to ON next week which should speed up deliveries considerably. (i’m talking about nightly source/bfu baby!)

thumbs up all around. everyone send kupfer some good karma so we can get this thing putback to ON.

i’m going to be at the Minnesota Government IT Symposium next Tuesday & Wednesday to talk about open source in government, specifically OpenSolaris.

yes. when you’re a tech lead, you get to go to sunnier places, but when you’re a junior engineer, you get to go to St. Paul, MN. :-D oh well. i’ve got my down jacket and thermals ready.

i’m going to be gone all next month. i’ll be taking some vacation the first week and a half going to Langkawi & Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. i’ll be working remotely from Taiwan the rest of the month alternating between Taipei and Hualian. if, by any random chance, people happen to want to talk OpenSolaris, let me know and i’ll be happy to meet anyone.

random ramblings…

i thought i had managed to wean myself off coffee… i was all proud of myself for not having caffeine headaches/withdrawal, until i realised i was eating about 10-12 chocolate-covered espresso beans a day.

oh well.

wendy and i are looking into taking shooting lessons and buying a gun. sad i know. we’ve been discussing it for a while, but after hearing weird sounds coming from the hallway last night (turned out to be cold wood creaking), and realising that all i had handy in the bedroom to use as potential weapons was a hammer, a corded drill, a level, and a 25 pound unhung mirrour, we realised we need something better. (though the image of me trying to defend against an attack with a corded drill with a 6 foot cord was comical).

it’s troubling to me that we would have to resort to it, but… well… oakland just ain’t a great place. though, with SF having passed their anti-gun law, i’m hopefuly that most would-be-thieves in oakland will now choose to cross the bridge and rob some poor defense-less people in the city instead (sorry Jesse…) :-P . though, there is the matter of the $3 bridge toll i suppose.

do thieves use Fastrak?

i read a great quote today from the head of Alameda County’s sheriff dept. the sheriff’s dept. just got a new boat to patrol the Oakland harbour to prevent drug smuggling, etc. (a great move, imho). when asked by a reporter why the boat needed twin guns on the front prow, he replied “we try to kill them [people breaking the law] with kindness, but if that doesn’t work – we shoot them.”

OpenSolaris @ UCSD

Thursday, Dec 1. 2005  –  Category: Musings, OpenSolaris

eric and I had a great visit to UCSD on Tuesday. eric blogged a good summary, so i’ll just point you to his page to read (his blog also has links to the two presentations we made on OpenSolaris & DTrace).

I think the day was really productive, we talked to a lot of great people (Prof. Snoeren, Prof. Voelker, the CSE 120 students, Jeff Avila (IT guy at SDSC), Prof. Baden (my old advisor), and the rest of the CSE staff we bumped into on our tour of the gorgeous new CSE building). It was a really packed day, but a lot of fun and really beneficial (hopefully to others, as well as to us).

And I had a Karl Strauss Amber at the airport…. mmmm… it’s been a while since I’ve had a Karl Strauss. :-D
