laptop suggestions

Monday, Oct 18. 2004  –  Category: Musings

so i think it’s time for me to get a new laptop…. anyone got any suggestions?

i need it to be light (<5 pounds), as i’ll be commuting with it on BART. i’m thinking of the Fujitsu Lifebook P1120, and Dell Inspiron 700m. Anyone got any other suggestions? It’s got to be able to run Solaris or Linux though…

Anyone in the Bay Area have a P1120 I could play with for a bit? I love the specs, but I wanna see how it actually feels before I commit to it.

IBM Thinkpad T42 14.1″ baby! Best PC laptop around. Then there’s also the Sony S series, but their customer service sucks.

    Thinkpad X40

Lifebook S6000 series is also pretty nice and a bit cheaper (those you can go to fry’s to look at, smash a bit).

Another recommendation for thinkpad’s, T’s or X’s… I have an A22P and it runs solaris 10 sans Audio (and is also bigger than what you want), but supposedly the T’s have the Intel i810 that can be made to work if audio is important.

Look at the Avaratec’s (sp?). Because they are a no name brand, although becoming quite popular due to their price, they are loaded with hardware features. A software feature you will be happy to learn of is a preloading Linux kernel for the sound and dvd features at boot time if this is your presently intended use! No windoz for mp3’s or movies!!!

Steve, check the first article: http://www.gottadeal.com/

I second nad’s suggestion, take a look at Averatecs. I have’ve had one of these for over a year (they were called Sotec back then), and I’m still very happy with it. Their newest models blow off the water Dells the like on price/features ratio.

    Check it out: http://www.averatec.com/notebooks/3200series.htm

    Thanks, Dmitri

thanks for all the suggestions guys… the avaretecs were appealing, but i ended up going with the Inspiron 700m. after Kermy’s $750 off coupon deal, it was too good to pass up..
